The fortress developed from earlier Roman and Byzantine structures and was later expanded as a medieval stronghold, with its current form incorporating towers, walls, terraces, and rooms carved into the local tuff. Its name comes from a medieval legend that the poet Virgil concealed a magical egg somewhere within the castle, linking the object’s safety to the fate of Naples. The terraces provide broad views across the Gulf of Naples toward Mount Vesuvius, while the nearby Borgo Marinari retains its maritime character.
Piazza dei Martiri is a historic square in Naples’s Chiaia district, close to the waterfront and surrounded by elegant residential buildings, cafés, shops, and cultural venues. At its center stands a tall monument topped by a statue representing Victory, while the monument’s four lions symbolize different periods of Neapolitan resistance and political change. The square’s name, meaning “Square of the Martyrs,” commemorates Neapolitans who died in struggles for freedom. Its position near Via Chiaia, the Riviera di Chiaia, and the Villa Comunale makes it a useful point for exploring the city’s western historic districts and seafront.
The Lungomare di Napoli is the broad seafront promenade stretching along the Gulf of Naples, linking the waterfront districts of Santa Lucia, Chiaia, and Mergellina. The pedestrian route follows the coast with views across the bay toward Mount Vesuvius, while Castel dell’Ovo rises from the water at the edge of the historic Santa Lucia area. Restaurants, cafés, and pizzerias line parts of the waterfront, and the promenade is used by walkers, cyclists, and local residents. Its setting connects several important Naples landmarks, including Villa Comunale, Borgo Marinari, and the Mergellina harbor, within a continuous coastal landscape.
Royal Palace of Naples, or Palazzo Reale, stands along Piazza del Plebiscito and was built as a royal residence overlooking the Gulf of Naples. Designed initially by architect Domenico Fontana, the palace combines late Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements, reflecting successive changes to the building. Its historic apartments contain richly decorated rooms, paintings, tapestries, furniture, porcelain, and clocks, while the monumental Grand Staircase leads into the former royal apartments. The complex also includes the Court Theatre, Royal Chapel, and Hanging Garden, whose elevated position provides views toward the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
Fontana del Gigante, or Fountain of the Giant, is a monumental Baroque fountain on Naples’s waterfront near Castel dell’Ovo. Created by Pietro Bernini, Michelangelo Naccherino, and Cosimo Fanzago, the fountain is composed of three broad arches framed by columns and pilasters, with large sculptural elements and carved coats of arms. Its name comes from the monumental scale of the structure rather than a single giant figure. The fountain was moved from its original location near the Royal Palace to the area beside Castel dell’Ovo, where it now forms part of the historic waterfront landscape overlooking the Gulf of Naples.
Discesa Gaiola is a coastal road and pedestrian route leading toward the Gaiola area in Posillipo, one of Naples’s western districts. The descent winds through a hillside landscape of Mediterranean vegetation, villas, and views over the Gulf of Naples before reaching the protected coastal zone around Gaiola. Nearby lies the Gaiola Underwater Archaeological Park, where submerged Roman remains can be seen in the clear waters around the small Gaiola islands. The area is also close to Marechiaro, a former fishing village known for its waterfront houses and small harbor, making Discesa Gaiola part of one of Naples’s distinctive coastal neighborhoods.
