Waimea, also known as Kamuela, is an upcountry community on Hawaiʻi Island, set between the Kohala Mountains and the island’s volcanic slopes. Unlike the dry lava fields of the nearby Kohala Coast, Waimea is characterized by green pastures, rolling hills, and open ranchland. Its elevation brings cooler temperatures than the coastal resorts, while views toward Mauna Kea and the surrounding mountains help define the landscape. The town serves as a centre for ranching, agriculture, dining, arts, and community life, with a mix of local businesses and cultural attractions along its main roads.

Waimea is closely associated with paniolo, the Hawaiian cowboy tradition that developed around the island’s ranches. Parker Ranch played a major role in shaping the community, supporting cattle operations and helping establish ranching as an important part of local life. The Paniolo Preservation Society and historic sites connected with Parker Ranch interpret this heritage through exhibits, buildings, photographs, and stories. Waimea’s cultural identity also reflects Native Hawaiian traditions and the long agricultural use of the Kohala region. Community events, music, hula, and local arts continue to provide ways for residents to maintain connections with the area’s history.

The landscape surrounding Waimea offers a striking contrast between pastureland and volcanic terrain. Kohala Mountain Road leads north from town through ranch country toward Hāwī and Kapaʻau, while Kahuā Ranch provides access to working ranch landscapes and outdoor activities. Along the nearby coast, Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site preserves one of the major Hawaiian temples associated with Kamehameha I and the unification of the Hawaiian Islands. Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area, one of Hawaiʻi Island’s largest white-sand beaches, is also within reach, providing access to swimming, snorkeling, and coastal scenery when ocean conditions are suitable.

Food in Waimea reflects the island’s agricultural setting, with restaurants making use of local beef, seafood, vegetables, coffee, and other Hawaiʻi-grown ingredients. Merriman’s is particularly associated with Hawaiʻi Regional Cuisine, while the Waimea Town Market provides locally produced food and agricultural goods. The Kahilu Theatre is another important community institution, presenting music, dance, theatre, and other performances. One distinctive detail is the town’s strong paniolo identity: ranching remains visible in the surrounding pastures, local events, and cultural organizations, making Waimea one of the clearest places on Hawaiʻi Island to experience the island’s cowboy heritage.
